Getaway House: My Experience in a Tiny House in the Woods
Looking for an escape from city life for a few days? Look no further! Getaway House has a series of tiny house cabins throughout the USA that are perfect for unwinding and relaxing. Staying in a tiny house cabin in the woods forces you to unplug from work, Wi-Fi, and worries and allows you to just be in the moment. I absolutely loved my 2 night Getaway House experience in NC and can’t wait to tell you all about it!

What Is Getaway?
Getaway is exactly like it sounds… it’s a chance to Getaway from city life and escape to the woods for a few days of relaxation. Getaway has over a dozen “Outposts” sprinkled all over the USA with 15-30 tiny houses on property.
Don’t worry though – you won’t even notice your “neighbors” are there because they’ve done a great job of placing the Getaway cabins between trees in the woods. The Getaway House experience is all about disconnecting from the world and relaxing – which is exactly what I did!
Each Outpost location is about 1-2 hours from a large city which makes it the perfect weekend getaway for a quick road trip! I personally went to the Getaway Asheboro location, which is 90 minutes from Charlotte, NC and Raleigh, NC!
Most cabins can accommodate 2 people, but some can fit up to 4 people (queen size bunks)! The best part – your furry friend is welcome to tag along on this weekend adventure!
About the Getaway Tiny House:
Getaway’s Tiny Cabins are absolutely stunning. You’ll be spending most, if not all, of your time in and around the cabin so let’s talk about the features! The best part about the Getaway house is the large window next to the bed. The window really feels like you’re completely immersed in the woods. It’s so picturesque! The other features in the Getaway House include:
- lock keypad (staff will text you the entry code before check in)
- queen sized bed (or queen bunks if you book a 4-person cabin)
- a bathroom with a hot shower and towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- modern toilet (not a composting toilet)
- heat and air conditioning
- a kitchenette with a mini fridge, two burner stove, dishware, and cookware
- an outdoor fire pit with grilling grate and firewood for purchase
- outdoor seating (2 lounge chairs and 1 picnic table)
- electrical outlets
But wait, that’s not all! Each Getaway cabin has a few reading books, a deck of cards, a radio, and a lantern! They have a small basket of provisions for purchase if you forgot anything essential (like coffee, snacks, etc). If you choose to bring your dog, they’ll provide you with a water bowl, treats, and waste bags.
Not included in the Getaway Tiny House:
There are a few things that are *not* included in your Getaway house – most of which are on purpose to allow you to disconnect. They do not have a hair dryer, outdoor cover for rain, or mirror (although some cabins do have a 4×6 handheld mirror). There are no TVs and no WiFi to further encourage you to disconnect.
They also weirdly didn’t have hand soap – but they did provide body wash and dish soap.
What to Pack for Your Getaway:
I definitely over-packed for my 2 day Getaway which just made the cabin cluttered and frustrating. Only pack what you need – try a minimalist approach for your Getaway House experience. I’m sharing the essentials with you below:
- Clothes for the # of Days You’re There
- Hiking Attire & Hiking Shoes
- PJs (lightweight because the comforter is heavy)
- Bug Spray & Sunscreen
- Umbrella/Rain Coat
- Groceries – plan out your food in advance. More on this below.
- Optional: Hammock, Book, Journal, Portable Speaker, Hair Dryer, Blanket if traveling in the winter

Eating & Cooking at Your Getaway:
I was so overwhelmed when trying to plan out meals for my Getaway. Once I got there, it all seemed so silly to be stressed out over 2 days worth of meals. In the end, cooking ended up being one of my favorite Getaway house experiences!
The tiny houses are stocked with the essentials like Tin Foil, Salt, Pepper, and Olive Oil. From there, you’ll only need to pack extra seasonings, protein, sides, and snacks.
This is what worked for me:
- Breakfast: Pastries & Muffins
- Lunch (day 1): Pre-made Cold Sandwich from home
Lunch (day 2): Chicken Quesadilla, Chips, and Salsa - Dinner (night 1): Chicken and Broccoli
Dinner (night 2): Hamburgers and Diced Potatoes - Snacks: Chips, Fruit, Granola Bars
- Beverages: Water Bottles, Wine Bottles
The Getaway house has drinkable water, but I also brought a few water bottles with me! The olive oil they provide is in small packets, and I tend to use a lot of olive oil, so I brought extra.
Now, you’re probably wondering… what about s’mores?! You can’t have a Getaway camping experience without s’mores over the campfire?! Fret not – Getaway has a special treat for you that includes a S’mores Starter Kit. They provide you with 4 Small Skewers, a few marshmallows, gram crackers, and chocolates! You can also bring your own reusable Skewers if you plan to make more S’mores or cook hot dogs, etc.
As far as Kitchen Dishware goes, you’ll have 4 mugs, 4 cups, 4 bowls, 4 plates, and 4 knives/forks/spoons. They provide a skillet for the stove and lots of tinfoil for the grill. There are plenty of sharp knives for kitchen prep as well as scissors, paper towels, trash bags, and a wine cork! I truly had everything I needed for a great cooking experience.
Keep in mind, obviously there is no dishwasher – be mindful of the plates & bowls you use to avoid having to clean dishes multiple times throughout your stay.
FAQ ABout Getaway House:
Which Getaway Outpost did you visit?
I personally visited the Getaway Asheboro Outpost. This is one of their newer locations with 30 cabins onsite.
What is the Check In / Check Out Process?
A few days before my check in date, I received a text with a downloadable map for the Outpost. It’s important to save the map to your phone in case you lose service on your drive! Then, the morning of check in, I received a text with my cabin name and the code to unlock the door! Check in is at 3PM. I received a similar text the morning of my checkout, which is at 11AM.
Are there any staff onsite?
Yep! You can text the staff anytime throughout the weekend with any questions or concerns. For instance, I texted them on my second day about a trash pick up which they instantly accommodated! However, if you don’t need anything, you won’t ever see them!
What did you do while you were there?
I cooked, I ate, I relaxed, I went for walks around the outpost, I read a book, and I napped in my hammock. I know others enjoy exploring the local area, but I wanted to take full advantage of my weekend retreat without the rest of society interfering.
Did you feel safe?
100% yes! The houses are in a small outpost with about 15-30 other cabins so you aren’t truly alone and abandoned in the woods. There is a lock on each cabin that requires a four digit code which changes for each guest.
Would you book a Getaway house again?
100% yes! It was such a liberating feeling being able to turn off my phone and ignore notifications for 2 days. I would visit alone, with a friend, or a significant other for a weekend retreat.
